Droitwich Salvation army charity shop burglary - 'over £500 taken'

THE DROITWICH community has been shocked after a burglary at the town’s much-loved Salvation Army Charity Shop saw hundreds of pounds taken.

Those working for the charity have told the Standard over £500 was lost when one of its large windows was smashed in, and its safe was forced open on Tuesday morning.

Police were later called to the St Andrews Street shop, and the shop had to close for the day.

Major Sandra Collins is the leader of the Salvation Army in Droitwich.

She told the Standard: “It was discovered when the manager arrived for work this morning.

“One of our large windows was smashed, and our safe was forced open.




“We have lost over £500, which was the cash taken over the last week.”

“It’s unbelievable what has happened, it is such a lot of money to lose.


“We run programmes for all ages at our Centre in Ombersley Way, and we are so grateful for all the support we receive from the people of Droitwich.”

The Salvation Army uses profit from the shop to support community activities in Droitwich.

It runs regular pre-school, mums and toddlers, friendship groups, luncheon clubs, and Christmas gifts to families that need support.

The Droitwich Salvation Army church feels its community work is a demonstration of Gods love for us all.

The charity shop posted news of the burglary on social media, leading many people to express their shock.

One said: “So sorry to read this today. Thoughts are with all those who give their time at the shop.”

Others said they were ‘disgusted and shocked’ at the news, while many people offered help to those at trhe charity shop recoup some of the losses.

Major Collins thanked those who offered to help and said anyone who would like to donate can do so by visiting their website and following the JustGiving information on there.

The Charity Shop is open every Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am until 4pm and stocks a selection of good quality clothes, bric-a-brac and furniture.

Donations can be received any time the shop is open.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police has said an investigation into reports of the charity shop burglary is ongoing.
