DROITWICH Spa Town Council has vowed to make sure its constituents’ voices are heard by making a case for full involvement in the county’s move towards a devolved unitary authority.
The council has written to both Worcestershire County and Wychavon District Councils to formally request involvement in discussions regarding the transition to an all-encompassing authority for the county.
While the reorganisation, mandated by central government, is set to proceed regardless, Droitwich Spa Town Council says it is determined to ensure the voices of local residents are heard, and the best possible outcome is secured for the town.
A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “We recognise that this transition will happen, and while we cannot prevent it, we can work to make sure that Droitwich gets the best possible deal.
“By engaging proactively in discussions, we can push for a system that benefits our residents and ensures that local services are managed efficiently and effectively at a level that truly understands the town’s needs.”
The required move to unitary authority’s across Britain was announced as part of government devolution reforms.
Council’s were asked to provide road-maps of transition to be placed on a fast-track scheme, something which Worcestershire County Council was not chosen for despite efforts to postpone May’s local elections and begin the process of devolution.
Worcestershire will eventually move to a unitary authority but the process of devolution in the county will be slower than that of the council’s who were selected for the government’s fast-track scheme.
The move to a unitary authority will bring significant changes to the way local government operates, and Droitwich Spa Town Council believes this presents a unique opportunity to return control of local service delivery.
By having full involvement, the council aims to enhance delivery, improve responsiveness to community needs, and ensure decisions affecting Droitwich are made as close to home as possible.
Droitwich Spa Town Council urges residents to stay informed and engaged as further developments unfold. The council has committed to remain transparent and provide updates as discussions progress.
