YOUNG people from Droitwich Spa High School found out about the importance of recycling after a visit from the founder of a website which sells eco business and school supplies.

Mat Roper, from greenbuying.co.uk, educated the year eight students about recycling, surprising the students with some shocking statistics.

Among them were that it takes 24 trees to make a tonne of paper, recycling one aluminium drinks can can save enough energy to power a TV for three hours and that plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose.

Elizabeth Whitehouse, who is head of year eight, has been running recycling schemes at the school and invited Mr Roper to talk to the pupils.

She said: “When I taught Citizenship a few years ago a group of students established recycling at our school as their Active Citizenship project.

“They have long since left but I maintain the responsibility to ensure that the school does all it can to recycle its waste.”

She added tutor groups had a recycling bin and students took responsibility for the public areas around the school.
