ABOUT 130 people took on a 21-mile charity walk from Droitwich Spa Marina, along the restored Droitwich Canal and River Severn, to Diglis in Worcester to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

First back was 49-year-old Droitwich firefighter Peter Doran who completed the course in an impressive five hours, despite wearing full uniform for the duration.

He was inspired by fellow Spatan Elaine Tesho – she is organising a range of fund-raising events for the hospice which is currently caring for her sister Lisa.

The charity hopes the walk – and a shorter 11-mile one which was participated in by another 120 people – will raise £19,000 towards the care of patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and the support of their families.

St Richard’s Hospice senior fund-raiser Alison Parkes said: “It was a great day with all our walkers in good spirits despite the occasional rain shower.

“We really appreciate the efforts of everyone who took part and the money they raised will help St Richard’s make a difference to the quality of life of our patients and families.”

The Waterways Walk is now in its fifth year and is kindly sponsored by Droitwich Spa Marina.
