DROITWICH Tennis Club served up a special afternoon for the president of the Lawn Tennis Association when she visited the county on Sunday.

Cathie Sabin, who is the first female hold that position in the LTA’s long history, has been travelling the country visiting clubs to gauge what is going on at grass roots level in the sport.

She also met and talked to a number of members and parents and presented the prizes to the winners of a junior tournament that had taken place on the day.

Droitwich was voted 2014 Club of the Year across Herefordshire & Worcestershire and Cathie was particularly interested to know how the club had managed to grow its membership to its highest level in nearly ten years, while numbers generally playing tennis across the UK has fallen.

Neil Bates, chairman of the club said “We pride ourselves on being a really friendly club and Cathie was keen to find out all about us. It was also very interesting to hear what the LTA plans are for the future, which sound very exciting for British Tennis.”
