Droitwich field falls victim to another illegal traveller camp

A GROUP of travellers has again moved into Droitwich, setting up another illegal encampment on St George’s Field, off Ombersley Way.

As The Standard went to press, officers from Wychavon District Council were in the process of moving them on.

A notice was served to the group yesterday morning (Thursday), instructing the travellers to leave the site by 4pm today (Friday).

The group moved onto the field at 9pm on Wednesday through broken entrance gates and by yesterday, there were 12 caravans and other vehicles on the site.

The incident comes just weeks after steps were taken by Wychavon District Council to secure the land with a trench and wooden posts.

That action followed a previous illegal encampment on the same field back in June.

Coun Bob Brookes said: “We are very disappointed that this has happened, especially after the measures taken to prevent it.”

He praised Wychavon District Council for doing all it could to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson confirmed officers attended with Wychavon representatives when the notice was served and added they were monitoriting the situation.
