Spa win shoot out to progress in cup

DROITWICH Spa held their nerve to beat Badsey United in a thrilling penalty shoot out to move into the next round of the County Cup.

The visitors thought they had scuppered their chances of victory when they let slip a 2-0 lead, but Spa kept their composure as they scored all six of their penalties.

Droitwich were missing five players due to work commitments and holidays, but this failed to hinder the away side as they got off to a superb start on Saturday.

Nick Seabourne put Spa ahead with a controlled finished after just ten minutes before grabbing a second on the half hour mark. Seabourne steered the ball home after excellent play from Steve Pitt.

Droitwich also started the second half brightly and almost put the game to bed as Chris Higginson rattled the cross bar with a powerful strike from 18 yards.

As the third goal continued to elude them, Badsey came back into the contest and they closed the gap with a fortuitous goal on the 80th minute. Suddenly, Spa were up against it as Badsey went for the equaliser and they got the goal they were looking for with two minutes left.

All the momentum was with the hosts who also had a chance to win it in the dying seconds, so it was somewhat fortunate for Spa that the game went straight into a penalty shoot out.

After five penalties each and with the scores locked at 4-4, Droitwich won a dramatic encounter with their sixth spot kick.
