Queen Elizabeth Roses planted and appeal for more to help with community garden

TWO roses have been planted in Droitwich to mark HM the Queen becoming Britain’s longest serving monarch.

The two Queen Elizabeth Roses were put into the St Andrews Church community garden on Wednesday (September 9) during a special ceremony.

The idea to plant the two roses was the brainchild of church warden Hillary Fisher who felt it would be a fantastic way to mark the monarch’s marvellous milestone.

Wendy Carter, one of the community garden group, said: “It was a very well-attended event and an occasion everyone was happy to celebrate.

“Hopefully now we have planted them, the Queen Elizabeth roses will flourish and grace our garden.”

The community garden was created in 2012 and, as well as lawned areas, floral borders and raised flowerbeds, it also has an open space in the centre where local events are held.

Back in July it played host to MadCap Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which brought in the crowds and was hailed a great success.

Wendy praised those who had helped get the community garden project off the ground, including parishoners Les Peacock and Keith Slaughter.

But she added more help was needed so the plot could reach its full potential as being a place for all the community.

“We do have some volunteers already, but we always need more and we would love to hear from anyone however much time they are able to spare – whether it is once a month or once a week.”

The community garden will be opening its gates this weekend in conjunction with the annual Salt Fest and anyone wanting to find out more can speak to those behind the garden tomorrow (Saturday) or Sunday (September 13).

Alternatively, volunteers can call Wendy on 01905 775124.
