A MAIN road in Droitwich has been closed after two crashes involving five cars happened within 500 yards of each other.

The incidents happened about 5pm this evening (Wednesday) near to the Copcut Island and two people were trapped – one in each smash.

One man has now been released after the roof of the car he was in was removed and he is now being assessed by doctors.

Firefighters are still trying to free a person from the other, more serious, crash.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said four crews – two from Droitwich and two from Worcester – were sent to the scene.

The vehicles involved include a red Nissan estate, a blue BMW, a silver Ford Mondeo, a silver Peugeot 206 and a silver Fiat.

Following the crashes, Roman Way is closed between the A38 Bromsgrove Road and A442 Kidderminster Road.

And, as it is expected to be closed for some time, a diversionary route is being put in place via the Ombersley slip road.

Droitwich Police’s Safer Neighbourhood Team is asking drivers to find an alternative route if possible.

A spokesperson added: “Thank you for your patience and please drive safely.”
