Droitwich ten-day 'bigger and better' Christmas market gets the go ahead

IT MAY only be September but plans for the festive season in Droitwich are already under way.

At Monday’s (September 14) Droitwich Town Council meeting, members gave the green light to a longer Christmas market in the town and agreed the date of this year’s festive lights switch-on.

Following the success of the inaugural event last year, this year’s Christmas market is going to be bigger and better and run for ten days in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The first one will run from December 7, through to December 13 and the market will return from December 22 to Christmas Eve.

And to give the event a boost and a festive gift to visitors to the market, members also agreed to offer free parking on the Saturday (December 12).

The Christmas market will be run by Joe Jones, from OnetoOne Events, who currently runs Droitwich’s Charter Market.

He told The Standard: “We are looking for anything quirky or Christmassy – from sweets, festive cakes, mulled wine and mince pies to trinketts, handmade jewellery and other gifts.

“We basically want anything with a Christmassy feel – we would also be interested in hearing from people interested in singing carols or providing entertainment.

“The stalls are log cabin style ones with electricity and lighting and by then the town will be decorated in its usual festive way.

“It was very successful last year and from the feedback we got, the public opinion was that people wanted it earlier as they had already spent some of their money by then.”

Coun Bob Brookes whose idea it was to bring a Christmas market to Droitwich in 2014 said: “The event went really well last year and we had a lot of good feedback from people, saying how much they enjoyed it last year.

“This year we are hoping even more people will come out and support it to make the event even bigger and better.”

Anyone who wants to find out about the Christmas market and anyone interested in having a stall should call Mr Jones on 07866 914735.

* Also on Monday, Droitwich Town Council rubber stamped the date for this year’s Christmas lights switch-on.

That will take place on November 28 outside St Richard’s House which will have new festive lights this year.

Droitwich Town Council is currently putting together the programme of entertainment for the evening.
