A FUND-RAISER in aid of a charity launched to carry on the legacy of a young Droitwich cricketer will take place tomorrow (Saturday).

The golf day event, being hosted at the Gaudet Luce Golf Club, on Middle Lane, will be held in memory of 23-year Jack Stephens who unexpectedly collapsed and died on June 9.

Jack was on his way to Edgbaston to watch a one day international between England and New Zealand when he lost consciousness in Malvern’s retail park.

Jack, who lived in Droitwich before moving to Barnards Green in Malvern, played at Droitwich Golf Club, was a captain at Droitwich Cricket Club and worked at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.

So far 34 golfers have signed up to take part in the 18-hole event which will kick off at 10am.

Lee Birt, Jack’s cousin, who is helping to organise the event said they were hoping to make £1,000 from the day.

He added so far four holes had been sponsored by local businesses and Jack’s family but more were needed if anyone wanted to support their cause. They said they would also be grateful for any donations of raffle prizes.

Jack’s mum said: “Jack was passionate that there should be greater equality in life particularly around access to education.

“In order to honour Jack’s vision for equality and carry forward his legacy we are aiming to set up a charity to support people for whom finance is a genuine barrier to studying at degree level.

“Please help us to support others in Jack’s memory.”
