A DISEASED Droitwich tree is being transformed into a piece of art in order to save the trunk.
A routine inspection of the beech tree in Lido Park showed it had a fungal disease called Meripilus Giganteus and Wychavon District Council decided the crown of the plant had to be removed because it posed a health and safety risk.
Officers decided to keep the trunk and brought in artist Tom Harvey to shape it into a sculpture of a young salt working to reflect the town’s heritage.
Lynn Stevens, parks officer for Wychavon District Council, said: “It’s always sad when we have to remove any tree, particularly one this old, so it’s positive that we’ve been able to preserve it in some form.
“This art work will create an interesting feature for the town and park users to enjoy viewing.”
