IT HAS been another record-breaking year for Droitwich Royal British Legion which, thanks to the generosity of Spatans, has had its most successful Poppy Appeal ever.
In a letter to The Standard, Steve Moore, the chairman of the Droitwich RBL, and Mel Bates, the honorary Poppy Appeal Organiser, said they wanted to extend their sincere thanks to all the schools, clubs, shops, hotels, care homes, restaurants, pubs and local businesses for their generous support of the campaign.
Last year’s collection of £20,650 was a record for the Droitwich Branch and given all the national publicity that accompanied that event it was always going to be difficult to match let alone improve on the result.
“The Legion is delighted to report that due to the magnificent generosity of the Droitwich public, this year’s collection has in fact increased the total by £1,655 or 7.4 per cent to £22,260.”
On this year’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations, the pair added: “It was unfortunate that this year the traditional parade from the station to the War Memorial had to be cancelled due to the absence of police support, nevertheless the Remembrance Service took place on November 8, and was supported by a large crowd, including the Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Worcestershire, Lady Hughes and the MP for Mid Worcestershire Nigel Huddleston, with many expressing their appreciation of the dignity, organisation and arrangements.
“The Legion would also like to express its sincere thanks to The Rotary and Lions Clubs of Droitwich Spa and all the other volunteers for their incredible support, for without them this result would not have been possible.”
