Sparkles WI 'sparks' our good deeds for Droitwich campaign - what will you do in 2016?

Droitwich Editorial 16th Jan, 2016 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

MEMBERS of the town’s Sparkles WI have started the new year with a new project.

The kind-hearted women from the organisation’s ‘Knit and Natter’ group have donated three hand-crafted blankets to Spectrum Days, which provides specialist support to people with PMLD Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).

The blankets will be used by carers when they take clients out in their wheelchairs to keep them warm for the rest of the winter.

Belinda Heywood, who leads the Knit and Natter group, which meets each month at The Old Cock pub, said: “Spectrum did ask us to donate any spare blankets which we had as they are much-needed especially for outings.

“So we made it a Knit and Natter project and the ladies got their needles and crochet hooks out to make lots of squares which we have sewn together.

“Not only will they keep the wind out but they are really colourful and look amazing.”

Sparkles plan to keep on knitting and to continue to hand finished blankets over to Spectrum.

And we at The Standard are hoping the gesture can be used to kickstart a Droitwich-wide ‘one good deed a month’ campaign.

Sparkles WI has got the race under way and we now want to hear from other community groups and organisations who want to take the baton on and do their own good deed in February for the less fortunate.

Standard editor Tristan Harris said: “When we heard about Sparkles’ kind act, we thought it would be nice if we could get at least 12 acts of kindness – one-a-month – which help others in Droitwich, throughout 2016.

“We want to hear from community groups – whether it be cubs, scouts, brownies, WI, Rotary, Lions, Inner Wheel, sports clubs, schools, churches or other organisations based in Droitwich.

“As well as helping the charity or cause, it will also help local organisations get some publicity for their groups and events.”

Community groups can let The Standard’s newsteam know about their good deeds by e-mailing [email protected] or by calling 01527 588657.

The next meeting of Sparkles WI takes place at 7.15pm on February 4 at The Old Library.
