DROITWICH residents, community groups and other organisations in the town are being urged to come forward with ideas for a mass celebration which will make HM The Queen’s 90th birthday this summer a day to remember.
The plea to Spatans was made at the meeting of Droitwich Town Council on Monday after the authority received a letter from the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Her Majesty’s representative in the county.
It outlines how at The Mall in London on June 12, there would be a traditional British street party style lunch for more than 10,000 guests and, it added, it was hoped thousands of communities all over the UK would hold similar lunches and other events in celebration of The Queen’s longevity.
On the Friday (June 10), there will be a special service at Worcester Cathedral to mark Her Majesty’s magnificent milestone, the Saturday (June 11) will see Trooping the Colour – The Queen’s traditional birthday celebration – take place in London, so it was decided the Sunday would be the best day for the events in Droitwich.
Members mooted at Monday’s meeting that the open space of Salt Barrow Market – an often under-used area in Droitwich town centre – would provide the perfect platform for the birthday bash.
They also said they hoped the town centre’s pubs would get involved in the festivities, as they had done so well in the past.
Anyone wanting to find out more or put forward ideas should call Droitwich Town Council on 01905 774258.
