THE NORBURY Theatre will play host to the prestigious premier of a new American musical comedy which has taken Chicago and New York by storm.
And when The Guide to Being Single is performed by The Starbuck Theatre Company, one of the show’s writers will be in the audience, having flown across the pond from Chicago specifically to see how it is received by a British audience.
The company’s team of talented actors have also made some adjustments so the characters are more-suited to a UK audience and there is a six-piece band, led by MD Chris Corcoran, which will be performing as part of the production.
The story centres around ‘unlucky in love’ twenty-somethings who decide the best way to cure their relationship problems is to stay single as they mingle throughout the bars of Wrigleyville.
The Guide to Being Single – a new book from an anonymous author – gives you 25 simple rules to ‘have fun without getting hurt’, including never calling or texting, always going to their place and never breaking the rules. But the characters question what if the fun of the rules is breaking them?
The Starbuck Theatre Company is a new Midlands group which only formed in 2014. It carried out its first mini tour – of the musical I Love You Because – at community values throughout the region last year.
Artistic director Sarah Pavlovs said the production which was provided a ‘refreshing take on the contemporary musical’ was a real coup for the Norbury.
She added it was her aim to bring new musical theatre to community venues at affordable prices so wider audiences can experience new works without having to travel to big cities to see them.
“This show has only been performed in two cities in America, and so to be given this opportunity to be the first company in the UK to stage this show is something extra special for us, and for the Midlands.
“The writers, Alexi Kovin and Kaitlin Gilgenbach, have been hugely supportive from our first contact with them about doing the show, and Kaitlin is even flying over from Chicago to see it.
“We’ve had so many laughs in rehearsals and now we just can’t wait to share this new piece of theatre with an audience.
“If you’ve ever been in love, fallen out of love, wanted to date or wanted to be single – this show is for you,” she said.
Due to some of the content, this show it is recommended for those over the age of 14.
