Volunteers battle to save swan trapped in brambles in Droitwich

KIND-HEARTED volunteers have rescued a ‘frightened’ swan which was trapped in brambles behind a pub in Droitwich.

Members of Swans of Wychbold found the bird by the Barley Mow after passer-by, Mick Brady, made the call to charity organiser, Jan Harrigan.

The 82-year-old sent one of her best swan catchers, John Stuart along with team member Jess on the rescue mission.

The swan was seen getting chased by a pair of other swans for ‘trespassing’ – landing in some undergrowth where it got caught and trapped.

Jan said it was difficult to untangle the swan, which was ‘frightened to death and shocked’ but the mission was a success.

She added: “The swan hatched just last year, so by this time, many like it will get kicked out by parents and literally urged to fly the nest to fend for themselves.

“They’re like teenagers – and many get into trouble or even killed if they don’t take heed.”

The swan was not in a serious condition, however a blood test has been taken and they are waiting for results.

“The situation is no different to the way humans would react to a stranger caught trespassing on private property,” she added.

“At the same time, it also highlights the problem all wildlife have because there’s not enough room for them in canals and waterways, which are used for fishing and boating.”

In addition to this, she said there are also a lot of problems with uncontrolled dogs who attack swans, tearing off beaks and wings.

Jan works in collaboration with local vets and will call them for help if required.

She said the swans are allowed to ‘socialise’ with others staying at the ‘swan motel’ and still recovering from injuries.

The swan rescue centre has also made a positive impression on young people angling for careers in animal welfare and who regularly volunteer during college release days.

Speaking about her 40 year experience, she said: “I’ve never been hurt by a swan because I treat them well – and we manage to establish a mutual respect of sorts.”

Speaking of her dedication, she added: “If you enjoy what you are doing, you just keep going. It’s good for me and it’s good for them.”
