Droitwich racer returns to set the record straight

Droitwich Editorial 4th Mar, 2016 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A DROITWICH racer is returning to the Chateau Impney to claim his title more than 50 years after he should have made into the record books.

David West first competed in the last ever Hagley and district Light Car Club sprint in 1967 as a last-minute replacement but failed to inform the organisers. After taking on six other drivers in his Morris Mini Cooper and completing the course in an impressive 28.49 seconds, the wrong name was recorded in the records.

With no other events being held over the last five decades David has had to wait half a century to return and put pedal to the metal to claim his rightful spot in the Chateau hall of fame. Last year he took part in the first race the Chateau held after they relaunched the event but was pipped to the post in the last second. He is therefore hitting the tarmac again this year to finally see his name in the record books.

He said: “It’s nice to win, but you don’t do it for that. It’s just really great to take part in an event like Chateau Impney, especially after all this time.

“There’s a lot more going on and there’s a real buzz around the place. Lots of people were coming over and talking to me and asking questions.

“They all love the Mini because they’re used to seeing them driving on the roads. Last year, the atmosphere was fantastic.”

Tickets to the event cost £20 and can be bought at www.chateauimpneyhillclimb.com or by calling 0845 017 0637.
