Droitwich rugby player yearning for international success

DROITWICH SPA’S Jade Shekells insists she is looking to make her mark at international level after winning the BUCS Rugby Championship at Twickenham.

Shekells played at centre for Cardiff Metropolitan University as they beat Northumbria University 20-5 at the home of English rugby on March 23.

The 19-year-old has already been involved with England Under-20s training squads in the past and the former Hartpury College pupil is determined to ensure that continues.

“I am hoping to get reselected for England Under-20s set-up and push on from there,” said Shekells, who has been supported by the SSE Next Generation programme.

“And with my university, we are doing well so hopefully we will be back in the BUCS Final next year.

“Winning the BUCS Final is up there as one of the top two achievements so far. It is a massive achievement and it was great to play at Twickenham – which is the main arena in England and we are playing on the same pitch as some great players.

“It is a massive achievement and it means that all of the hard work that we have put in off the pitch this season has paid off. It is a great season.

“I feel this season we have grown and grown as a team and we have all bonded as a team. We have worked hard in the gym and on the field, and we have been growing and growing and we finally got the prize.

“I am very proud of everyone because everyone gave their all until the very end. It is a great experience and a great achievement to end the season on a high.”

Cardiff Met took control of BUCS Final with first-half tries from Elli Norkett and Olivia Archer and the contest was ended just after the restart when Cerys Ballett and Norkett dotted down in quick succession.

Shekells, a first-year Sports and Exercise Science student, added: “This event highlights women’s rugby and that is a big plus. It shows we are good players and shows that all of the work that we do and the work of Cardiff Metropolitan University is paying off and comes together.

“BUCS is a great opportunity and it gives other players the chance to try something new and have great experiences.

“University sport is a great opportunity and it allows you to play alongside some of your best friends.

“It is challenging but it is also enjoyable so you get the best of both worlds. And if you enjoy it then you are more likely to do well.”
