New Droitwich charity shop opens for the Worcestershire Association of Carers

A LEADING local charity will open its first shop in Droitwich which it hopes will help fund its work to reach 50,000 ‘hidden’ carers across the county.

The Worcestershire Association of Carers (WAC) is looking to recruit 15-20 volunteers at the shop which has opened today (Friday).

Funds from the shop will contribute to the charity’s goal of reaching more carers to provide them with support.

The charity said there are 63,00 carers in Worcestershire and it provides support to 11,000 of these.

However, it said there are at least a further 50,000 ‘hidden carers’ which it aims to reach.

With this powerful goal in mind, WAC is pursuing an ‘engagement strategy’ with libraries, community organisations and social media right across the county.

Communications officer Jane Taylor told the Standard: “Many people who look after fragile family members and friends do not see themselves as ‘carers’ – which makes it a challenge to reach out to everyone with support.

“This means they may miss out on support and services that would be useful for them.”

Chief executive Carole Cumino said “We have been supporting carers in the county since 1998 and volunteers are a valuable resource for our service users and staff.

“We are actively working towards the national “Investing in Volunteers” programme and are on track to become the first organisation in the county to successfully achieve this gold standard quality award.”
