HERE is the latest ‘Mayor’s Diary’ from Droitwich Mayor Coun Roy Murphy:

ON JULY 1 at Worcester Cathedral a large congregation assembled to attend a highly moving service to commemorate the Battle of the Somme.

Choirs and performances by young actors laid emphasis to the human tragedy of the battle.

Other formal occasions attended were the Civic Service at the magnificent St Mary’s Church, Kidderminster, the Droitwich branch of the town’s Royal British Legion who celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Legion’s creation and the Wychavon District Council Civic Service held at St Peter’s Church, Evesham.

In contrast, the annual prize-giving day at Dodderhill School demonstrated the achievements and skills of pupils there. The dedication of the teaching staff and school governors was clearly evident.

A spectacular event was the annual Fun Run organised by Sight Concern in the Lido Park. More than 400 people took part in the run in an atmosphere of fun and frolics in glorious colour. The event raised over £1,000 and the day was a credit to the enthusiasm and dedication of members and the organising committee. The event is to be staged again later in the autumn in Redditch

A well-attended and informative meeting of the Droitwich Fair Trade Association was held at the Sacred Heart Community Hall. The valuable work of TRAIDCRAFT in assisting small farmers and producers in underdeveloped countries was highlighted.

On Sunday (July 24), mayors and chairmen from neighbouring towns were guests of the Droitwich Mayor at a Sunday lunch at the Droitwich Golf Club, Ford Lane.

Also present were representatives of Droitwich societies and members of the Mayor’s chosen charities – the Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) and Westlands Community Hall Association.
