MORE than 60 Droitwich residents from toddlers to pensioners enjoyed playing tennis in the blazing sunshine to highlight a campaign for better courts.
Droitwich Tennis Club set up their Tennis in the Park at the Lido on Saturday (August 6) and described it a huge success.
Parents brought their children, from as young as three-years-old, to take part and some stayed for the adult sessions with coaches Lee Cowan and Dee Smith.
The youngsters also had a chance to play with the Tennis Fun Factory as part of the activities set out to promote the campaign to resurface the Lido courts, which has been organised by Elaine Newman.
She said: “It was great to see so many people come down and take advantage of the opportunity to play on the courts and I would really like to thank everyone from Droitwich Tennis Club who made this happen.
“Hopefully people will now see how poor the surface is and what a great benefit to the town it would be to have these courts in great condition.”
Tennis has been played in the park since the 1920’s but in recent years the surface has started to deteriorate, causing a drop in the number of people using the courts.
Once the courts have been repaired Elaine hopes it will be the start of regular events throughout the summer months giving everyone the opportunity to play and get more people out on the courts.
The campaign is being backed by the tennis club and Wychavon District Council. The council had pledged 50 per cent of the £40,000 cost and fundraisers need to find £20,000.
Elaine has begun a crowd-funding drive by setting up a JustGiving page and a Facebook page and is now hoping residents, businesses and other organisations will help make the dream a reality.
