IN HIS latest exclusive column for the paper Droitwich Mayor Coun Roy Murphy reflects on a very busy August…..
AUGUST is generally viewed as a month with little action.
Not so for Droitwich town mayor.
A visit to the town’s Rotary Club showed a dynamic society with an imaginative programme of events planned.
The club supports small charities and individuals in need.
An approach came from a small group of tennis enthusiasts campaigning to upgrade the tennis courts in the Lido Park with support from Wychavon District Council. They have embarked on a major fund-raising exercise with a target of £20,000.
Droitwich Methodist Church formed a committee which organised a programme of activities attractive to elderly residents eager to meet new friends and adopt new skills. The highlight of the programme was a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon and boat trip on the river.
A members’ visit to the Abberley Clock Tower, an architectural gem, was the annual August outing organised by Droitwich History and Archaeological Society. The climb up the spiral staircase of the Tower was rewarded with a spectacular view over rural Worcestershire.
During the last weekend of August, the Chateau played host to an international organisation, the Ex Saker Students Association of the Saker Baptist College, Limbe, Cameroon. The agenda of their convention included an AGM, a charitable project at a school during the afternoon followed by evening dinner and ball, all conducted in a spirit of friendship and good humour.
Droitwich Horticultural Society staged its annual show at the town’s leisure centre.
Exhibited were incredibly beautiful flower arrangements with contributors drawn from all over the county.
On show also were fruit and vegetables, arts and crafts, a children’s section and a display of photographs of old Droitwich.
Outside the hall were craft stalls, a tombola and representatives from the Young Firefighters, the Swan Rescue, Glowerspiece Minifarm and a musical backdrop provided by a fair organ. This event is a credit to the organisers.
Coun Roy Murphy,
Mayor of Droitwich.
