Droitwich Spa boss Adam Drew looking forward to opening day of new season

ADAM DREW says he’s looking forward to his first competitive game in charge of Droitwich Spa’s first team as they begin life in Midlands 3 West (South).

After finishing rock bottom of Midlands 2 West (South) last season, Droitwich will be hoping for a quick return when they begin the new campaign at home to newly promoted Upton-upon-Severn on Saturday.

Following on from their 54-0 victory over Old Saltleians, Droitwich put on another strong show on Saturday in a 19-12 pre-season friendly defeat at Stourbridge Lions.

And with pre-season numbers at a high in training, head coach Drew has plenty of positive thoughts ahead of the new season.

“I’m immensely looking forward to the new campaign and so are the players,” he said.

“Pre-season has been great and we’ve had plenty of numbers turn up to training – we’ve got so much strength in depth.

“Even though we’re playing a side which is newly promoted, we need to treat them as if they’re champions of the world.

“You’re going to make hard work of things resting on your laurels so the lads need to put a shift in.

“We’re driving down to Upton to win and we’ll do our best to do that.”

Ahead of this weekend’s trip to last season’s Midlands 4 West (South) runners-up, Drew will be without hooker Rob Poke and Sean Walker.
