A FORMER councillor who served both at town and district level for more than 32 years is to be given a prestigious award and made an Honorary Alderman of Droitwich.

A motion to bestow the honour upon Peter Pinfield was put forward by Coun Alan Humphries at Monday’s Droitwich Town Council meeting and was unanimously backed by members.

Mr Pinfield retired after the 2015 local elections and he is now serving in another community role – as head of not-for-profit Healthwatch Worcestershire which provides an independent voice for patients and carers in all health and social care matters.

During his citation, Coun Humphries said: “The public and press recognition of his service to Droitwich was widely welcomed across all political parties as he was renowned for putting the public good before party politics.”

He went on to give examples of Mr Pinfield’s leadership and influence over the years for both town and district council.

And he listed several of his achievements, including safeguarding the future of the Old Library and Covercroft as community venues, improving the town’s swimming pool, a successful campaign to get traffic lights installed outside the Chateau Impney, the replacement of flat roofs on the Westlands and capital projects at Droitwich Spa High School.

Coun Humphries said his greatest achievement was his determination to put together the grant funding and his commitment to the £2million core funding which saw the completion of the canal project.

“As you can see, Droitwich has been at the heart of everything Peter has done,” added Coun Humphries.

“There are many other projects that Peter has been involved in during his public life that could be mentioned and I think it is fair to say that, over the years, he has helped hundreds of Droitwich people with their problems and issues.”

Mr Pinfield, who moved his family to Droitwich in the 1970s, said: “I’m proud and privileged – it is an honour to be recognised by the town I love.

“It was important to me to give something back to the town and I would like to think with my 32 years as a councillor I have done that.

“It was very rewarding being able to help Droitwich people and campaign for local causes.”
