Impressive turn-out at Droitwich's Remembrance Day parade and service

THERE was an impressive turn-out for Remembrance Sunday in Droitwich this morning as hundreds gathered to pay their respects.

Victoria Square was packed with dense crowds which included young babies and children as well as older people and war veterans.

Rev Nigel Byard began the ceremony with a few words. He said: “Of course today is not just about remembering the past, but those around the world who are caught up in violent conflict, and we all pray for peace.

“As we begin this simple Act of Remembrance let’s just prepare ourselves for all there is to come.”

Wreaths were laid by several local charities, businesses and councillors, including Mayor of Droitwich Spa Coun Roy Murphy and Lady Hughes.

While the occasion was sombre, the mood was light in Droitwich especially with young cubs, scouts and cadets as they walked into square.

The procession also included mace bearers Anthony Bourne and Steve Bennett, consort to deputy lieutenant Lord Hughes, town clerk Pam Craney and deputy chairman of Wychavon District Council Coun Rob Adams.

Crowds filtered out of the square and made their way to nearby St Andrew’s Church where Rev Byard welcomed the congregation.

Former Wychavon councillor Alan Fisher also addressed the church full of people with a prayer for those who have lost their lives in the two World Wars and other conflicts.
