First sample of Droitwich brine taken to be tested to see if it is fit for human consumption

THE FIRST sample of Droitwich brine has been extracted from Tower Hill to be tested to see if it is fit for human consumption.

And Coun Bob Brookes, who has been behind the campaign to bring it back, had a jar of the perfectly clear liquid at the Droitwich Town Council meeting on Monday (December 12) .

The brine comes from the pump 30ft down the 100ft deep well.

We reported back in October how the new pipework for the venture had been installed at the site and had been tested.

Tower Hill houses the last remaining ‘active’ brine well in Droitwich and is also already used to supply brine to the town’s Lido.

This year was the first time in almost a century that Droitwich’s world famous brine has flowed and, if the analysis deems it safe, small-scale salt production may return to the town so the substance could be used to flavour and preserve some foods.

Coun Brookes said: “I would like to thank the officers from Wychavon District Council for taking time out of their busy schedule to make this possible.”

If the brine passes the test, a modern version of the traditional open pan method used in Droitwich for thousands of years will be tried out.
