'Busy year for the Spa' - A Christmas message from the Mayor of Droitwich

Droitwich Editorial 24th Dec, 2016   0

SEASON’S greetings to all residents of Droitwich.

There have been momentous events nationally and in Droitwich to make 2016 a memorable year.

Public events such as Remembrance Day, our civic service, Droitwich Festivals, the Christmas lights switch-on, the Friday Charter markets and others were supported in record numbers and reflect our town’s vibrancy.

We have had problems and uncertainties such as controversial planning applications and the future of the Raven Hotel complex but we have had Sunday afternoon band concerts in Lido Park throughout the summer with appreciative audiences and bumper Lido attendances.

New Homes Bonus money has been awarded to projects, including the King George V Sports Pavilion, the Community Pavilion for St Peter’s Fields Sports Association, the Community Garden for the Council for Voluntary Services and to Droitwich Rugby Club.

I have met many town newcomers who have expressed their delight and appreciation of living in Droitwich.

The voluntary sector is thriving and cultural activities responding to the town’s heritage such as the Civic Society, History and Archaeology Society, U3A, Guided Town Walks and Droitwich Arts Network all contribute to the town’s heritage supported by the Town Council’s Heritage Centre. Societies catering for disadvantaged people are all supported by volunteers who give their time and skills to great effect. Sports and health-generating activities for all ages take place with mums and dads assisting young people in swimming, football, rugby and many others.

Whilst the future is difficult to predict we look forward to a long-awaited and necessary High Street improvement scheme, funded by town, district and county councils. There will be some disruption during 2017 but it will mean an enhanced High Street that is fit for purpose.

For those sitting down for dinner on Christmas Day without a loved member of your family at the table because they are serving in the armed forces, I hope they will be safely return soon. I would like to add special thanks to all those working over Christmas in the emergency services, in hospitals and other essential services.

Please take care if you are travelling and I hope you will enjoy spending time with friends and family.

On behalf of all councillors and staff at the town council I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful new year.

Coun Roy Murphy

Mayor of Droitwich Spa
