STAFF and students from Droitwich’s Council for Voluntary Services were given an insight into the workings of the UK political system when they were given a tour of Westminster, thanks to Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston.
The group was able to have a look around both the House of Commons and House of Lords chambers, enjoying an interactive session with Parliament’s educational services team.
Mr Huddleston then joined them for a chat and a question and answer session, praising the level of interest showed by the students who came up with a variety of questions for him, including what a typical day at the office was like for members of Parliament.
Georgie Stevens, the course tutor, said the trip had a very informative, highly engaging tour and an excellent, interactive and inspirational workshop on law-making.
“It was extremely beneficial to all students who are now more aware of our political system, how it works and how it impacts their daily lives.
“Learning in relation to promoting British values has been significantly reinforced.
“All students should be given the opportunity to visit.”
Mr Huddleston said it was a pleasure to host group.
“Parliament is everybody’s building, and I encourage all of my constituents to come and visit – and schools should particularly take advantage of the sessions offered by the excellent educational services team.”
Schools can call 0207 219 4496 to find out how to book a school visit and can claim subsidies to help with transport for the trip.
Droitwich CVS offers opportunities for young people aged between 16 and 18 years across Worcestershire to attend an accredited learning and work skills programme which is designed to help participants gain better English and maths qualifications and valuable experience and accredited skills in areas, such as motor vehicle and adult and child care.
