A SWAN which was found covered in blood on the Droitwich Canal has been rescued and reunited with its partner.
The bird was discovered on the waterway on Friday (March 31) and was saved by the Wychbold Swan Rescue and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service after calls from two members of the public.
Representatives from the charity and the fire crew spent most of the afternoon trying to coax the swan because, as well as the injury, it was also very distressed.
Jan Harrigan, from Wychbold Swan Rescue, told The Standard: “When we got it back here we noticed it had nasty wounds to its mouth and jaw – we’ve got no idea how it happened.
“It looked a lot worse as well because even a small amount of red blood on a pure white bird goes a long way.”
She added after initial treatment on Friday it started to improve and looked a lot better on Saturday.
By Sunday (April 2), it was ready to be released which the rescue centre did.
“It was very important we got the swan back to its partner, especially at this time of year as they have just started nesting.
“We have checked it since its release and it is doing well, which is a relief.
A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed it was called at 3.50pm.
“A water rescue vehicle, sledge and long reach poles were used to get to the swan,” she added.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to the fire service who were brilliant,” added Jan.
