TRIBUTES have been paid to Coun Maureen Lawley who has died at the age of 79.
Maureen, who was both a Droitwich Town and Wychavon District councillor, moved to Droitwich from Birmingham with her husband Don. He was also a councillor.
The pair got involved in public life almost immediately and her and Don, who passed away in 2011, both also served as mayor.
They celebrated 50 years of marriage earlier in 2011.
Coun Jan Bolton, who has known Maureen for 50 years, said: “She was always very approachable, you could call her at any time of day or night and she would sort things out. That is what made her such a good councillor.
“She was a lovely lady who was always very well dressed and always wore a hat.
“Both her and Don always put their hearts and souls into their work and even visited homes in the area on Christmas Day.
“When they held their mayoral events they would always keep them local, at the Chateau or The Raven when it was open.
“They also had a very happy marriage and did everything together.
“They were both a true credit to the town and Maureen, like Don, will be very sadly missed by many.”
Maureen is survived by her son Mark, who looked after her towards the end of her illness, his partner Jayne Caswell and her grandchildren Grace and Hope.
“She didn’t want to go into a home or hospice and wanted to die at home and he ensured that happened,” added Coun Bolton.
She passed away at her home in Fernhill Heath on June 23.
Maureen’s funeral will take place at midday next Saturday, July 15, at St Nicholas Church, Droitwich.
Her husband is buried in the churchyard there and she will be laid to rest with him.
