THERE was an emotional day on Saturday when the memorial picnic bench to Allen Green who died in a tragic narrowboating accident in Droitwich was unveiled in Vines Park.
More than 20 people, including the mayor of Droitwich Spa Coun Shaun Best and the waterways chaplain, were present for the event.
The fitting memorial near the Netherwich Basin was made possible by fund-raising by his mum Jean Green and the Droitwich community and the Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society (WBDCS) which agreed to fund the rest of the amount needed.
Coun Best told The Standard it was a lovely tribute.
“People will be able to come down and sit together, remember Allen and even have a picnic.”
Tony Brannon, from the Worcester-Birmingham & Droitwich Canals Society, said: “It went absolutely fantastically.
“It was a pretty good turn-out and it was a lovely morning weatherwise.”
Flowers were placed on the bench before it was unveiled and on the seat is a plaque which reads ‘Allen Green, Helmsman of Netherwich Basin. Always in our hearts. Never forgotten’.
Allen lost his life last year when his narrowboat became stuck in a lock on the Droitwich Canals and filled up with water.
