Still plenty to catch at this year's Droitwich ArtsFest

Droitwich Editorial 28th Jul, 2017   0

DROITWICH ArtsFest 2017 has had another stellar week with more brilliant performances and events for residents to enjoy and there is still more to come, writes George Bray.

From Monday, July 31, to August 12 (excluding Thursdays), there will be resident artists at Droitwich Library who as well as exhibiting their work will also be on hand to talk about what they do. Entry is free and it starts at 10am each day. Peter Hawkins from Droitwich Arts Network (DAN) will be there from from 10am until 4pm next Friday, August 4.

Also on Monday, at 7pm, there will be a guided tour of the mosaics at the Sacred Heart Church. Entry is free, but the church will greatly appreciate any donations made.

On August 1, members of the Droitwich Arts Network (DAN) are hosting an exhibition of Mail Art starting at 1pm at Droitwich Library. It will continue through the month and end on September 1.

The Talbot Inn plays host to a night of free folk music from Droitwich Folk Club from 8pm until 10.30pm on Thursday, August 3. Email [email protected] for more information on the evening of free music.

The last day of the festival, Saturday, August 5, is a busy day.

DAN’s ‘Arts in View’, in Victoria Square, will see artists showcasing their skills and works and talking to visitors.

For all aspiring and learning guitarists, Mike Johns is hosting an acoustic fingerstyle workshop at the Meetbox from 10am to 12.30pm next Saturday. Those interested will need to book a place for the workshop by calling Mike on 01905 772367. Participants will need to bring along their own acoustic guitar and music stand.

St Andrew’s Square will play host to a wealth of musical entertainment next Saturday, including the Droitwich Ukulele Club from 1pm. The club meets fortnightly on Wednesday evenings at the Rotary House in Droitwich and enjoys playing everything from 60s classics, to popular modern day songs.

Just after the Ukulele Club is finished, Mandy Harding will be taking centre stage with her saxophone. Mandy first picked up the saxophone eight years ago and is often found on the streets of Droitwich, raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, as her sister was diagnosed with it 18 years ago. Mandy’s performance will be starting at 2pm.

At 3pm, the Droitwich Community Choir will perform, singing anything from pop to rock, soul, gospel and musicals. It launched in 2012 and now has 80 members. It has with Russel Watson at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre in 2015, among others.

At 4pm, Kat Webber closes the ArtsFest with performances of some of her own work, inspired by the world around her both in ‘the literal and metaphysical’ sense.
