YOUNGSTERS wanting to venture into the great outdoors over their summer break can take part in activities organised by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust (WWT), writes George Bray.
Children can go wild and let their hair down by exploring some of nature’s mysteries and having fun with animals at the trust’s Lower Smite Farm headquarters, between Droitwich Spa and Worcester.
The WWT is looking to encourage children to find the same love for nature as it has, and ‘grab some screen-free time’ and ‘get nose-to-nose with nature’.
The first event ‘What lurks beneath the surface?’ takes place on Thursday, August 3.
It offers children the chance to find out the whole new world which lives below the surface of the ponds at Lower Smite Farm.
From water scorpions to dragonfly larvae, youngsters will find plenty of fascinating creatures.
The second event, centring on minibeasts, will be a week on Tuesday, August 8.
Participants will uncover the mysteries of the creatures, explore which ones do battle and how they go about surviving.
‘Who’s Poo?’ is the third event on August 24 and will train children to become an dung detective by looking at different animals’ footprints and poo to identify who and what they are.
And for aspiring Bear Grylls, the Summer Survival event will conclude the programme on August 30. Youngsters can find out how to survive in the wild, how to build a shelter and how to stay warm.
Hannah Thomas said the activities offered families the chance to have fun, soak up natural world mysteries and discover something new.
“School’s finally out for the summer so it’s time to let your hair down and go wild about Worcestershire’s wonderful wildlife.”
Families are encouraged to come down to the farm and find out what dwells beneath the surface of ponds, uncover the mysteries of the minibeasts and learn how to identify some animal footprints and poo as well as learn some basic survival and shelter building skills.
All events run from 2pm to 4pm and cost £3.50 to partake in.
