A DROITWICH man who cycled 1,050 miles in aid of the British Heart Foundation has said Sunday’s Velo Birmingham ride coming through the town will bring back fond memories of his achievement.
Tom Parkes cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats via all the main bridges in the UK back in 1990, when he was aged 51, raising £1,300 for the cause.
Tom, who still cycles once a week, notching up about 20 miles, also recalled his mammoth ride from one end of the country to the other.
“It was a very gruelling solo ride where I covered about 115 miles-a-day.
“Also, because of the route, I didn’t use many main roads so I had to use a map and have my wits about me.”
And on Sunday, at the age of 78, he said he was looking forward to seeing all the cyclists as they pass through.
“I think it’s a great idea for it to come through the town.
“I know some people will be against it because of the closures but I think the organisers have planned the route very well.
“There are a lot of people in Droitwich who cycle and will be interested in the event.
“It will also highlight cycling as an activity – it’s a good way to get and keep fit – and lots of money will be raised for charities so it’s a good thing all round.”
