A GROUP of pupils from a Droitwich school have raised more than £760 for charity by making and selling gifts using recycled materials.

Five pupils from the last academic year at Westacre Middle School, who have since moved on to high school, were invited back to donate the funds to different local charities.

As part if the ‘Blood, Sweat and T-shirts’ enterprise project run in year seven during last year’s summer term, students created tea lanterns made from old baked bean cans, coasters made from old branches, painted pebbles and handbags from old pairs of jeans.

They were challenged to make a series of different products for sale using recycled materials with the project focusing on children’s working conditions around the world.

Overall, the children made a total of £766.21 with the winning group, known as KDF, generating £106.65 through manufacturing blackboards out of discarded pieces of wood.

As part of their prize, they were able to choose one of the charities they wished to donate to, their choice was Danemere Animal Rescue, a local charity based near Tibberton.

Mr Cotton, head of year seven at Westacre, said: “I still can’t believe the amount of money raised from the project and it just goes to show what inventive, enterprising children we have here at Westacre.

“The only problem was having to make sure none of the girls tried to smuggle any animals back on the minibus.”
