Fire safety scheme piloted in Droitwich is to run for another year

A PILOT scheme tried out by Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) in six areas, including Droitwich, has saved 358 residents from potential harm.

The 12-month project targeted fire safety issues created by rogue landlords of unlicensed HMO (Houses of Multiple Occupation) properties, including residences above commercial premises.

Carried out by HWFRS fire safety officers in Droitwich, Worcester, Evesham, Stourport, Kidderminster and Kington, it led to a significant increase in fire safety enforcements and meant residents who were in at risk properties are now living in safer conditions.

All of the identified HMO properties were given Business Fire Safety Checks (BFSCs) and where necessary a full fire safety inspection. In 17 per cent of cases examined, there was further Fire Safety Officer intervention and /or enforcement activities.

A premises database has also been updated in each area and, such has been the success of the scheme, fire service bosses have decided it will now run for another 12 months to follow up any enforcement action and to continue further safeguarding vulnerable people.

Mark Preece, Area Commander for the service’s community risk department, said the project proved invaluable in helping reduce the risk of harm or injury.

“Ultimately, the project has potentially saved lives and made properties safer within our communities of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.”

He urged any landlords who wanted further information or their properties checked or any tenants who think their home’s fire safety needs improving to call the team on 0800 032 1155.
