A CONSULTANT general surgeon from Droitwich has been featured in BBC Two’s documentary ‘Surgeons: At the Edge of Life’.
The three-part show follows a variety of consultants at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital who perform life changing procedures and innovative surgical techniques as part of their daily routines, including Samuel Ford.
In the second episode Mr Ford, who consults and operates out of the BMI The Droitwich Spa Hospital, removes a large cancerous sarcoma tumour from a 74-year-old patient.
Mr Ford and his colleague Prof David Gourevitch were not certain the tumour could be removed prior to opening her up, but it was worth the risk, as if left untreated, the patient was only given a month to live. The operation was a success, the tumour was safely removed and weighed almost 20kg which was a third of the patient’s body weight. The patient recovered well and is now able to enjoy life.
Mr Ford said “The team is delighted with the over-whelming positive response to the documentary. The series has given an insight into the operations we perform and raises the profile of patients with a diagnosis of sarcoma. Planning and team work are key to safe and successful surgery.”
As well as his keen interest in sarcoma tumours, Mr Ford also performs laparoscopic cholecystectomies, repair of all types of hernia and removal of lipomas. He consults and operates out of BMI The Droitwich Spa Hospital.
