Droitwich firefighters praised after swan rescue

THE DROITWICH Swift Water Rescue Team has been praised for the help it gave in rescuing a swan on Wednesday afternoon.

The firefighters attended the incident on the River Severn near Bewdley where the swan’s leg had become entangled in fishing line and she was caught in brambles.

Because the bird was around ten yards from the bank she was hard to reach so the crew used a boat to get to the distressed bird.

Jan Harrigan from Wychbold Swan Rescue said: “They were absolutely brilliant and so caring.

“It is such a pleasure to work with them.

“We needed the team as we don’t have the equipment.”

On the swan’s condition she said: “The fishing line was tight and she had lost all the feeling in her leg and foot.

“We had to cut the ring off to get to the fishing line and then remove it.

“After I massaged the leg and foot the feeling returned and the swan is now on the mend.”
