Witton Middle School's wordplay gave children a World Book Day with a difference

CHILDREN from Witton Middle School had a World Book Day with a difference when a ‘vocabulary parade’ was held, challenging them to come dressed as a word of their choice.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The costumes were amazing and included unusual and unique words such as ‘circumference’, ‘ambiguity’, ‘origami’ and ‘covert’.”

The children and teachers paraded around in their costumes and winners were selected for each class and year group.

Choosing the winners was a difficult choice for the judges as so much creativity and effort had gone into the costumes.

Other activities throughout the day saw children use their words to create ‘human sentences’, teach their fellow pupils what their words meant and take part in ‘Drop Everything and Read’ sessions. They saw students able to stop what they were doing and read their book for ten minutes when the DEaR bell rang.
