Man hits out at speeding motorcyclists on main Droitwich road

A DROITWICH man has hit out at ‘boy racer’ motorcyclists he claims are using a town road as a race track.

The householder, who does not want to be named, contacted The Standard about the issue on Roman Way.

“It has a 70mph speed limit and therefore makes it a ready-made speedway circuit for motorcyclists who derive gratification at getting as much noise and speed as possible with no regard to the amount of annoyance they create.

“I have been living in this house for 28 years and it has only been noticeable in the last year.

“I used to like to go and sit in my garden and read but I can’t do that anymore. I end up going in and closing all the windows to drown out the noise.

“A road that goes through a town of 25,000 people should not be any more than 50mph.”

He is now calling for the limit to be reduced in Roman Way and speed checks to be carried out there, along with Ombersley Road and Salwarpe Road which have 30mph limits.

“These roads are also crossed by hundreds of children from Droitwich Spa High School, Westacre Middle and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary and something needs to be put in place.”

He has also called on other residents who share his view to get in touch with the Worcestershire County Council Highways Department and Droitwich Police in a bid to get something done.

“There must be other people out there being affected by this, for example those living in Ledwych Gardens and Ombersley Way, and it will take more than one complaint to bring about change.”

Sgt Sarah Kent, from Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), said: “This issue has been highlighted to us and will be looked into.

“Motorists should adhere to speed limits at all times.

“Driving at an excessive or inappropriate speed puts themselves and other road users in danger and can affect the quality of life for local communities.”

A Worcestershire County Council spokesperson said: “We recently reviewed speed limits on all our major roads in the county. Average traffic speeds were taken into account and the number of accidents that have occurred.

“We have no current plans to reduce the speed limit on this stretch of road but we will continue to monitor the situation.”
