Droitwich ArtsFest gets off to rousing start with more to come this week

Droitwich Editorial 6th Jul, 2018   0

DROITWICH ArtsFest opened under blue skies on Saturday and with a variety of dance and art, writes Jamie Bush.

Droitwich Town Crier Edgar Harwood announced the start of the festival, which continues until July 28, and short speeches were given by Droitwich Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bill Moy, and MP Nigel Huddleston.

The free art exhibition was opened and shoppers and visitors to the town enjoyed an afternoon of dance in St Andrews Square.

Tracy Griffiths and her team showcased belly dancing and it was followed by international dance instructor John-James running a professional and lively Salsa session.

The afternoon ended with a very energetic Zumba class led by Eliana Keen.

And there is plenty more going on in the second week:

  • Tomorrow (Saturday) residents can create a ‘People’s Gallery’ near the High Street. In the evening, there will be a free music event in the St Andrews Square. It starts at 6.30pm, two bands will perform and there will be a cash bar.

  • At 2.30pm on Sunday (July 8), there will be a free afternoon concert in the Lido Park, featuring Woodley Concert Band. The event is promoted by Droitwich Spa Town Council.

  •  On Tuesday (July 10), the Droitwich Jazz Club will take place at the Gaudet Luce Golf Club at 8pm. Entrance is £9 at the gate.

n On Wednesday, July 11, there will be a Mime and Improvisation Workshop from 7pm to 9.30pm at Spectrum Days, Old Coach Road.  The class will be led by Emily Hastings. Admission is £5 for Members of the Droitwich Arts Network and £10 for non-members.

  •  The free art exhibition in the Library Gallery with members of Droitwich Arts Network and International MailArt runs between now and July 27. Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9.30am to 5.30pm; Tuesday: 9.30am to 6.30pm; and Saturday: 9.30am to 3.30pm.  Artists in residence Karen Harmon and Mary Jenkins will be there on Monday, July 9, and Tina Watkins on Wednesday, July 11.
