A VIBRANT new art mural telling the story of Droitwich’s history has been unveiled at the town’s Lido Park.

The artwork, by artist Rob Cowen, is located on the wall near to the tennis courts and was unveiled by Tony Rowley – the Chairman of Wychavon District Council – during a short ceremony on 10 September.

The 46-panel design spans over 96 metres and focuses on the town’s rich history, from Roman times to present day, featuring iconic buildings such as St Andrew’s Brine Baths and the Chateau Impney.

Earlier this year, the Greenspace team from Wychavon District Council drew up an advert and a brief to replace the original artwork which was painted in 2008 and featured the theme of ‘four seasons’.

Out of the 12 designs submitted and scored by interested parties, Rob Cowan was chosen to complete the work with the help of children from the Eco Council at St Peters C of E Academy.

He said: “The whole experience has been brilliant and I have met lots of lovely people along the way.

“Even though I did my own research for the design, people would come up to me and tell me interesting stories about their time living in Droitwich.

“I want to leave a legacy behind through my art.”

The mural, which was funded by the council through its park revenue budget, cost around £7,000 and was painted at intervals from July to September.

Coun Tony Rowley, Chairman of Wychavon District Council, said: “We are all really pleased with the outcome, the mural is of a superb quality and is such a unique design.

“It brightens up our lovely park and we hope it will be enjoyed by many people for years to come.”
