A MAN claiming to be homeless has pleaded guilty to accepting public donations despite having a roof over his head.

David Woodcock, 35, appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court pleaded guilty to begging, theft from a local Droitwich supermarket and breach of his community protection notice.

He was hit with several fines and faces a Criminal Behaviour Order application which was lodged by Droitwich police.

Sgt Sarah Kent, of Droitwich’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The conditions we are applying for mostly relate to his begging activities in Droitwich.

“We want to prevent this continuing.”

“Woodcock was regularly seen carrying pillows and a sleeping bag around with him, implying he was homeless, which is not true.

“He was extremely active around the Christmas period and preyed on people’s sympathy and holiday spirit.

“Begging is an offence and though it’s understandable that some members of the public want to help people who appear to be in need, it’s important this is done in a way that will help the individual in the longer term.”

Sgt Kent said she believed one of the best ways to do this was to support Droitwich Foodbank which helps ensure rough sleepers have enough food.
