HOME Secretary Sajid Javid says 101 non-emergency calls to the police will be free from April 2020.
The 15p charge will be scrapped and the Home Office will instead spend £5m a year to fund the service in the UK.
Mr Javid said: “The move will benefit millions every year – especially the vulnerable.
“Victims should not have to pay to report crimes.”
The phone service, which receives around 30m calls annually, connects the public to their local police force or one of their choice.
The 101 number was introduced in December 2011 to free-up calls to 999.
It is for reporting non-emergency incidents such as stolen property, criminal damage or anti-social behaviour.
