JAPANESE Knotweed has been discovered at Westwood Lodge Allotments in Droitwich.
The weed is very invasive, can grow up to 10cm per day and is capable of causing serious damage to homes and businesses.
Planning officers at Droitwich Spa Town Council believe the weed may have spread further than just Westwood Lodge, which is located on the roundabout at the junction of Briar Mill.
A spokesman from Droitwich Spa Town Council said: “If it goes unchecked it will destroy the whole area.
“We have spoken to the environmental team at Wychavon District Council, which owns part of the land, and currently we’re waiting to hear back.”
Japanese Knotweed has an extraordinary ability to spread from crown, stem and rhizome.
Even tiny amounts of cut stem, crown or rhizome are capable of producing a new plant.
It’s vigorous and can dominate natural landscapes.
Along riverbanks it is particularly problematic and can exacerbate flooding.
