THE CAMPAIGN to restore the Grade I listed 12th century church in Stoke Prior has now reached £165,000 but its organisers say there is still more to be done.
The drive must raise another £50,000 between now and the end of the year so it can qualify for £333,000 worth of National Lottery Heritage Funding.
St Michael’s and All Angels was renovated in the 19th century by Salt King John Corbett but the building, especially the tower, has fallen into a dangerous state of disrepair with severe structural damage.
The appeal began in 2015 and numerous fund-raising events and grants has helped reach their current total.
The latest boosts have included a disco at Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club which generated £560, £1,200 raised at a recent business breakfast and a total of £6,000 has come from other local businesses.
Gary Stokes said: “People have really pulled together since the start of the campaign and it is great to see.
“We need this one big push between now and December to get the appeal over the line.”
If all goes well work on the revamp is due to start next year to return the ornate church to its former glory.
