AROUND 300 people of all ages turned out to witness Droitwich Spa’s official Accession Proclamation of King Charles III which took place in the garden of St Richards House this afternoon.
The Royal British Legion standard bearers, Droitwich Town Crier Edgar Harwood, town and district councillors, town council representatives and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service firefighters were among those watching.
The Accession Proclamation (below) was read by Mayor of Droitwich Spa, Coun George Duffy, read out the declaration and paid tribute to The Late Queen Elizabeth II.
After the Proclamation, the crowd gathered hailed ‘God Save The King’ and sang the National Anthem – performed by the Droitwich Salvation Army Band – to conclude the ceremony.
Three cheers were also given to the new monarch.
Ginny Field, from the St Peters Field area, said: “I wanted to be here for history – I was only six when the last one was held and I may not get to see another one.”
Victoria Starkey had brought her two daughters Sophia, seven, and Francesca, two-and-a-half, to see the historical moment.
“We wanted to come down so we could be part of it as a family.
“Hopefully they’ll remember it when they are older.”
Sophia had brought flowers to lay at the base of the flag pole in memory of The Late Queen Elizabeth II.
She said she was sad when The Queen died and added about today’s ceremony: “It is very busy here.”
Coun Duffy added: “It’s been a great turn-out. There are so many people here to see history being made and to come together for the occasion.”
With just two days to get the word out about today’s ceremony he added: “It shows the greatness of modern technology but it’s also important to keep up traditions like this.
“Mark Keld and the Town Council has worked hard and done so well to get everything organised.
“It also shows how much the Royal Family, civic pride and our heritage means to people and brings them together.
“The monarchy is part of everyone’s life in the UK, Commonwealth and around the World and seems to be getting even more popular.
