FOOTBALL - Spa slip to Stapenhill defeat

DROITWICH Spa saw their five-game winning run come to an end after the Saltmen slumped to a 3-0 defeat away at Stapenhill.

Spa suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against the Staffordshire side who led through Sam Birks’s first-half goal before Jude Ayetine and Alex Weir struck in the second period at Maple Grove.

The result means Droitwich sit sixth in the Midland Football League Division One table, four points behind Bilston Town with four games in hand.

Stapenhill opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Birks finished from close range after a fine team move that involved several passes.

Spa thought they had drawn level early in the second period, following a goalmouth scramble, only for the goal to be disallowed.

And the home side doubled their lead on 75 minutes as Ayetine scored a superb solo goal after he cut in from the byline.

Stapenhill sealed the points in the final minute as Weir smashed the ball underneath Dom Rogerson after Lewis Campbell’s initial effort came back off the crossbar.

Droitwich are next in action at home to Stourport Swifts on Tuesday, March 7 in the Worcestershire Senior Cup semi-final with kick-off at 7.45pm at the King George Playing Fields.
