Droitwich Spa High School student 'restores faith in youth of today' after helping man who broke his leg

A STUDENT from Droitwich Spa High School sixth form has restored a resident’s ‘faith in the youth of today’ after he helped her husband who had fallen and broken his leg walking his dog.

Gabriel McAlinden, also known as ‘Gabe’, noticed David Nightingale calling out for help after falling over on the path opposite the school.

Gabe came to David’s aid with the help of two of his friends, who were both former Droitwich Spa High School students. They also returned David’s dog to his wife Veronica and updated her on her husband’s situation and whereabouts.

The sixth former stayed with David and called the emergency services, giving them as much information as he could whilst waiting for Veronica to arrive. When she got there, Gabe remained with the couple until he was sure they were okay and the emergency services were on the way.

Veronica said: “The students were so helpful to my husband.

“Gabe acted very maturely and his two friends, Joe Price and Mackenzie Bevan, were also very helpful.

“People say so much about ‘the youth of today’ and we hear so much adverse news of some, but these three show there are young people around who show a different side of humanity.

“We are so grateful to these three young men for their help and actions in a time of crisis.

“David also received a get well card and some chocolate through the letterbox. How thoughtful. We were very moved by this.”

David has now had a successful operation and is recovering well following his injury.

Ed Rollit, sixth-form pastoral lead at Droitwich Spa High School, said: “This shows all is not lost with the youth of today and also shows that our terrific high school here in Droitwich actually turns out some pretty reasonable kids.”
